Lend Lease Community Day 2013
Content Manager at September 19th, 2013
What a fantastic week we have had!
By way of background, Lend Lease approached the Scout Group a few weeks ago and asked if the 1st North Sydney Scout Group might like to be included in their Community Day 2013. Lend Lease Community Day has been operating since 1996 and occurred on 19th September (globally) this year. Each year more than 4000 Lend Lease employees around the world volunteer their time and lend their skill, resources and abilities to their local community projects. Community Day supports Lend Lease’s vision of becoming a sustainable organisation. There are about 350 sites globally which Lend Lease supported this year.
We were very fortunate in that we had a fairly large project team of 35 Lend Lease staff, and an equal number of parents from the group helping over the week, 17 the weekend before, 15 on the day, and 10 the weekend after. We also had some suppliers and contractors (including Coates Hire and Dulux) who all converged on the Hall for Community Day.
An incredible amount of work was done, a selection of photos below.
Thanks enormously to Srima and the whole team from Lend Lease, Coates Hire (led by Jack King who drive the BobCat all Thursday) for supplying vast amounts of equipment including a BobCat for two days, Dulux who not only provided tonnes of paint but also led the painting effort, DATS who donated three (3) skip bins (which we filled), and a bunch of other companies that substantially discounted their fees for us. See the Suppliers page for the details of everyone who helped.
Thanks especially to Mimi who looked after food and drink for close to 50 people on the day, Marcus, Geoff and Kate who all made trips to Bunnings and the many parents who did not one but two work-parties.
We started with an ambitious plan, North Sydney Council made minor requests to change the plan. Then we gave the plan to Lend Lease and asked them what they could do in one day. The answer was quite a lot!
We only had about 3 weeks for preparation and planning, so our plans were simple.
Everyone had to sign up on the day.
Site preparation out the front of the Hall.
Spreading road-base for under the pavers.
Jack from Coates Hire did the heavy lifting all day in the BobCat. Thanks Coats Hire for your support. Coates Hire supplied all the gear including a BobCat, jack-hammer, drills, ladders, tile cutters and more.
The show-piece is the new paved area in front of the hall, led by Ryan and Greg and a team from the Lend Lease Power Division at Seven Hills. The fence was a finished on Sunday by Alex with about 100 screws. The Lend Lease guys, helped by Romina, Grant and Nic on Sunday dug a drain so the hall should not ever flood again.
Mark, Jo, Nicky and Romina hard at work on the Canoe garden.
A couple of guys from Lend Lease and Geoff working on the new garden bed to shield and protect the rain water tank. This will eventually be extended along the rail line. North Sydney Council’s Bushland Project Officer is going to work with Sarah to make this happen in the next month or two.
Lend Lease team – many hands made light work of a lot of the jobs.
Third skip almost full. No more rubbish out the back or inside the hall! DATS supplied three (3) skip bins. Thanks DATS for your support.
Parents leaning post outside the hall, the plan is to screen the hall to make it more private in weeks to come.
The meeting room has been completely refurbished with almost new furniture, courtesy of Lend Lease (it came from one of their offices they are closing down).
The hall team completely rebuilt the fireplace, lintel can go back on over the weekend, and Anna polished the brass plaque.
The hall and painting team at work! Karen a.k.a. Singum and the hall team put up all of the boards, filled gaps in the walls and really gave the hall a facelift. Dulux provided the all the paint. Thanks DULUX for your support.
There were people working everywhere.
Kitchen team hard at work. They did a fantastic job. They came from Lend Lease in Brisbane, just happened to be in town on the day.
The kitchen splash-back almost finished. Andy (from Lend Lease Brisbane) did the hard work on the day, and fixed the cupboard doors and kick-boards as well, it looks fantastic. Carol and Nic put in the grout on Sunday, the only thing left is silicon.
Simone, Jonathan, Nicky and Colin enjoying a few well-earned beers.
New storage shelves downstairs (courtesy of Lend Lease). After Carol gave it a good clean, it has never looked so good.

All of the rubbish has been removed from the area behind the hall.
North Sydney Council asked us to put in silt bags and silt fence so as to minimise any sediment runoff onto the foreshore reserve. Kate had to drive to Bunnings at Chatswood to buy the silt bags and silt fence. Grant and Sophie spent an hour digging and Steve and team helped lay sleepers along the boundary as a silt trap.
Council is also going to help us in the weeks ahead by planting a garden along the back fence to screen the train line.
Total clean-out downstairs, the glass brick window was not finished on the day, one of the jobs for the working bee on Sunday. Ola took this job on and finished the bricks. The team on Sunday hung up the life jackets, they look great in their new home.
So tidy the hall is almost unrecognisable. Colin won the award for the dirtiest, stinkiest job of all. He spent much of the day under the hall pulling out an estimated 2-3 tonnes of rubbish that had accumulated over the past 40 years.
With paint from Dulux, and led by Ken and Geoff, the upstairs bathroom painted, looks much better now.
Site preparation out the back.
Srima and Andrew with some of the Lend Lease team.
The back-door paved area, it should never flood again.
Souvenir from the team, job well done guys 🙂
The team cleared lots of branches and brush from around the hall. Romina and Kate cleaned tonnes of rubbish off the top of the rock as well.
View from way up high in a cherry picker over the roof back to the Harbour bridge on a fabulous day. Ray is putting on the Gutter Guard and Andrew did the roof safety anchors.
Finally, Tim drafted a very nice sign to say thanks to the neighbours who were (with only one exception) wonderfully supportive.
A team of Lend Lease electricians including John, Tony, Ross and Mitch had a very productive day where they came back and completed a lot of electrical tasks including:
- Replaced the lights in the basement with weather proof fittings with the tube encapsulated within the fitting (a safety fitting so that kids cannot easily break glass with say a canoe paddle).
- Added a new fluorescent fitting in the basement.
- Rewired and replaced all of the circuit breakers with individual residual current breakers
- Fixed multiple hot connections on the board.
- New power point for the electric rear door.
- New LED flood light and switch for the rear loading area.
- Removed various redundant cables (which were still connected) throughout the basement area.
- Cable protection and re-positioned the light fittings in the basement toilet.
- Made safe and then refitted the power points in the kitchen before and after the tiling.
- Re-cable supply to light in stair way – which was found to be supplied from a light and power circuit breakers.
- Re-labelled the distribution board.
- Re-fixed cables throughout the basement.
It is not quite finished yet. Forbo Flooring Systems are going to put in new lino for the kitchen floor and Sarah is going to be working with Council over coming months on the landscaping around the hall.
The organisers: Srima McQuillan (Lend Lease Sponsor) and Andrew Stanner (1st North Sydney Scouts) looking pretty happy with the result 🙂
