Wine Tasting Fundraiser
Posted by Content Manager at July 30th, 2013
The first “parent-only” wine tasting fund-raiser will be held on Friday 30th August starting at 7:30pm. The event will be held in the home of Jodie and Marcus Elsum in Kirribilli. This is the main annual event for parents to get to know each other.
BYO: A plate of food or nibbles (and mineral water if you don’t drink wine).
The wine tasting event will be run by Julian Todd from BackVintage Wines. The theme of the evening (from a wine perspective) is the next time you go out to a restaurant and get given the “dreaded” wine list, you should have a bit more confidence selecting the right wine to match with your food. Julian will show everyone how to taste wine (and yes, there is a science and structure to it)! But once you know the technique, you’ll better appreciate tasting coffee, orange juice, olive oil etc etc.
BackVintage is willing to donate $15/case for every case of wine that is sold on the night; so we are hoping that all families buy a case or two or more 🙂
As a price guide, Julian buys and sells direct – i.e. every bottle of wine he sells on a wholesale pricing basis to the consumer. His wines sell for half what they would sell for in a conventional bottle shop. He says that the has designed the business around the $12.99 price point.
His BackVintage Mt Barker Riesling is rated the No 1 best value for $$ under $20 white in Australia by James Halliday. He has 3 wines in the top 20 red/white wine category for best value for $$ wines under $20 and 5 in total under $40 according to James Halliday who ranks him in the Top 10% of wineries in Australia.
BackVintage Wines source, blend and bottle wine for their own BackVintage label throughout Australia and NZ. The wine is selected by Nick Bulleid MW – Australia’s 3rd Master of Wine (there are only 19 MWs in Australia) and his signature of endorsement appears on every bottle. Their focus is quality and value. All of their wines are well structured, not faulted, well made and must be representative of the region, varietal and vintage.
Julian was formerly the Chairman of 1st Northbridge Scouts so he knows a bit about Scouting as well. We (the committee) hope that this will be a lot more fun than running a sausage sizzle at Bunnings. Please remember to bring a plate of food.
